Our school’s vision is summed up in the Japanese word “Henshin.”

It means to transform – to go from one body state to a higher state – like the archetypical mild-mannered person who becomes a superhero.

Our school mascots are, in fact superheroes.   We have them on the walls of our dojo (school) – each represents a characteristic to strive for:  perseverance, justice, respect, discipline, responsibility, etc.

Just as superheroes transform, so do we as martial artists.

When a student becomes a black belt, they wear the “henshin/transform” phrase on the left side of their belt.  It reminds them of where they came from, where they are now and where they will go.  The transformation is very personal, unique.  And each black belt has a story to tell.

But “Transformation” is partnered with the Karate America motto, “Might for Right.”  Karate isn’t about outward signs of strength and dominance, it’s about respect for self and others, integrity and fairness, gratefulness, perseverance, discipline, responsibility, and celebrating who you are – and who you will become.
