| We
use a "5-key Rating System" to evaluate a
student's progress. By using this system, we can provide
feedback to students as they develop their skills.
But the "5-key Rating
System" is more than a system for physical development in
martial arts. It encourages the development of
well-rounded martial artists who are also contributing members
of the community.
The components of the 5-key rating system are:

Attendance
- Students need to arrive to class 10-minutes
early ("on time")
- Students will attend classes at least 2-3 times per week, for the minimum number of weeks as
defined by the current belt level.
- Students are encouraged to attend more
classes. Students will receive credit for all classes they attend
on-time
- Attendance cards are designed to help students track their attendance

Knowledge
- Curriculum is defined at each level (basic, intermediate, advanced,
black belt.) We expect that students demonstrate mastery of the curriculum in order to promote to the next level.
- Belt levels have shorter-term goals that are designated by the earning of a "stripe" on the
belt.
- Students are expected to maintain their skills from all prior belt levels.
Spirit
- We expect students to come to class with a positive, "ready-to-work" attitude. This
attitude is demonstrated throughout class time through energy, enthusiasm, and a willingness to do their best every time.
Fitness
- Our motto is, "Do your best! Who's best? MY best!" We expect students to
show progressive physical improvement, increasing endurance -- aiming for their "personal best."
Dojo Protocol
Also known as "Rules of our Karate School," we expect students show respect
- To themselves, peers, parents, older/younger karate students as well as members of the community -
teachers, neighbors, peers, etc.
- To all Black Belts - we address them as, "Sir/Ma'am, Mr., Mrs., Ms., or Miss."
- To our school - we salute (bow) upon entering/exiting the karate floor. We also show
respect to our school by assisting staff in keeping it clean, safe and presentable.
- To fellow students and our instructors - we "focus our eyes, focus our minds, focus our bodies,
Ma'am/Sir!" We remain quiet and respectful before, during, and after class. We expect this of both visitors, parents and
students.
- To each other and our community - we are kind, thoughtful, non-judgmental, honest, supportive.
We also behave with integrity both in and out of the karate school.
